Research Interests

Within the Aston Institute for Forensic Linguistics I am based in the Centre for Forensic Text Analysis. I am currently working on a project dedicated to genre effects on individual language use, where it is investigated whether features of individual idiolectal styles are consistent across the various contexts and modalities.

My PhD thesis was an investigation into police interview discourse with 17- and 18-year-old suspects. It was analysed how the respective statuses of 'children' vs 'adults' and the associated safeguards for juvenile interviewees are manifested in naturally occurring interview data. The research emplyed methodological tools rooted in Conversation Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis. Of particular interest in this context are the (discursive) role of the Appropriate Adult in interviews with juveniles, as well as discursive orientations to age and status that reveal speakers' ideological attitudes.
