Biography

Claudia's research focuses on modernist and contemporary literature and culture. She has published widely on 20th and 21st century authors, including Thomas Mann, Kurt Tucholsky, Judith Hermann, Klaus Böldl and Peter Stamm. Her work in cinema studies includes articles on the cinematic portrayal of German reunification and the topic of migration in film. 

One of Claudia's main areas of expertise is cultural relations between Germany and Scandinavia. She holds a ph.d in German and Scandinavian Studies from the University of Göttingen and she has authored a monograph on intertertuality in Thomas Mann’s works with particular emphasis on Mann’s productive reception of writings by Danish literary impressionist Herman Bang. Continuing her work in this field, she recently completed a second monograph which analyses contemporary literary and cinematic representations of Scandinavia by German-language authors and filmmakers. 

In collaboration with Dr Uwe Schütte, Claudia organised the first international academic conference on the works of German writer Klaus Böldl at Aston University. Papers from the conference were published in 2014.

At Aston, Claudia teaches a variety of language and culture modules and contributes to the teaching on the International Management with Modern Languages (IBML) degree.  

Claudia is Director of Studies for all UG Programmes in the Department of Languages and Translation Studies
