Jude Preston is a Lecturer in the Work and Organisation Department at Aston University. Prior to taking up an academic career in 2011, Jude garnered over 15 years of cross-industry experience in strategic and operational HRM and business management. Her current research interests focus on diversity at work, with a particular interest in the challenges faced by the older workforce. An experienced teacher, she is currently leading the Aston Global Advantage professional development programme. Jude also runs her own consultancy company, specialising in providing learning and development services to the rail engineering industry.
My research interests broadly cover the learning processes and needs of non-typical learners, with a particular interest in older learners, those with learning differences, and those on the autism spectrum. This arose because of my observations of how older workers on the railway had different learning success which resulted in generally lower attainment, and this led to curiosity about what they found more challenging and why, and finally for my PhD, to explore the psychological changes associated with aging, how these impact on older workers' learning experience and what managers can do to support older workers' learning.
My PhD thesis title was:
'The Impact of perceived Human Resource Management System Strength on older workers' mental well-being, in-role behaviours, and satisfaction with learning opportunities'. Aston University, supervised by Dr J. Crawshaw and Prof Pawan Budhwar.
I also have a huge interest in pedagogy and ways to to support learning in different student groups such as apprentices, and in the master's level business students here at Aston.
