Prof Gary Misson is a practicing consultant ophthalmic surgeon with a long association with Aston University.  He trained in all aspects of clinical ophthalmology but most of his clinical work is now general ophthalmology and high volume cataract surgery.  Apart from medical degrees, he also holds degrees in physiology and pharmacology, mathematics and has a PhD in bio-optical engineering.  His teaching experience includes lecturing in human anatomy, clinical ophthalmology and biomedical engineering. Research interests have been wide-ranging but with an underlying theme of linking theoretical modelling to clinical applications, particular in the field of ophthalmic diagnostics.

Research Interests

  • Applied visual psychophysics, specifically the human perception of polarised light in normal and abnormal eyes
  • The structural and functional aspects of macular disease
