Gayan is a Senior Lecturer in Construction and Quantity Surveying at the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Infrastructure and Sustainable Engineering. He is a Chartered Construction Manager (MCIOB), Chartered Civil Engineering Surveyor (MCInstCES), a Member of the Association of Project Management (MAPM) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Gayan initially joined Aston University as a lecturer in construction in 2013, and taught in Aston's Construction Project Management programme for 5 years. Between 2018-2020, Gayan worked as a Senior Lecturer in Built Environment and as the Programme Leader for Quantity Surveying at Northumbria University. In his 2nd tenure at Aston University, he joined the newly established Department of Civil Engineering in Sept 2020 and is mostly involved with Construction Project Management and Quantity Surveying programmes.
Gayan completed his PhD at the School of the Built Environment, the University of Salford for which he received a fully-funded EPSRC studentship. His thesis was on resilience of construction SMEs to extreme weather events. He has continued to undertake research on disaster resilience-related issues including post-disaster recovery, the resilience of SMEs, flood adaptation etc since then. Apart from that, his research interests include cost management in construction, construction project management and sustainable construction.
Gayan's research interests include extreme weather events and construction SMEs, disaster management, the resilience of SMEs and adaptation to flooding.
Gayan regularly reviews papers related to these research areas on a number of international refereed journals including Construction Management and Economics, Disasters, and International Journal of Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment and peer-reviewed international conferences.
