    PhD projects

    I am interested in supervising PhD students willing to research technical or operational cyber security knowledge to solve real-life problems. Knowledge areas of interest include Trustworthy systems; Adversarial Behaviours; Security Operations and Incident Management (including Digital Forensics); Authentication, Authorisation and Accountability; Privacy and Online Rights; and Security of IoT and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS).

    Cyber security innovation prevents business disruption and mitigates the significant cost of cybercrime, which is likely to be growing. Achieving this poses challenges to business leaders and governments. Dr Haider Al-Khateeb’s work produces world-leading research in innovative and trustworthy AI-based cyber security solutions. Additionally, Haider is a keynote speaker, supports learning and teaching, and engages with the media and public awareness events.

    Dr Haider al-Khateeb is a Senior Lecturer in Cyber Security (Associate Professor equivalent) at the Cyber Security Innovation (CSI) Research Centre and Aston Business School, Aston University, UK. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), with a first-class BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, and a PhD in Cyber Security. He is a project lead for R&D and Knowledge Transfer activities with over 15 years of experience in the UK’s HE sector. Haider is actively engaged with the latest trends in technical and operational cyber security knowledge such as Adversarial Behaviours, Security Operations & Incident Management, and Privacy & Online Rights for vulnerable groups. He has published numerous professional and peer-reviewed articles, participated in a broad range of funded projects and worked with SMEs to launch new innovative products. His interest in a broad range of collaborative activities has led him to work with national and international researchers to achieve impact, publish in leading journals and write proposals addressing funding calls. His work has attracted various awards such as best conference papers, teaching awards and university achievement awards.

    Haider delivers hands-on training on topics such as Ethical Hacking as part of a proactive approach to protect computer systems. He has many years of experience with Transnational Education (TNE) and supported MSc programmes at Northumbria University, as well as delivering training in cyber security through leading IT training providers in the UK such as QA Ltd. Haider has also worked on the NCSC’s CyberFirst initiative, a pivotal part of the UK government’s National Cyber Security Programme to develop the UK's next generation of cyber professionals. Earlier in his career, he was a Reader in Cyber Security and Deputy Director of the Wolverhampton Cyber Research Institute (WCRI) at the University of Wolverhampton, and before that worked for the School of Computer Science and Technology, University of Bedfordshire.

    I am particularly interested in innovative and trustworthy AI-based cyber security solutions. Each year new research trends emerge, and these are of particular interest when associated with the cyber security knowledge areas listed above. Applications can vary from FinTech and Health to Cyberwarfare.

    Multidisciplinary Research – Interpreting security as a process (not a task or product) has extended my research interest in multidisciplinary projects. For example, I have been working on risk assessment combined with methods preserving digital evidence of cybercrime, especially anti-social behaviour (online harassment and stalking) taking place on social media. To achieve this objective, collaboration with psychologists, doctors, national helplines and the police were required to study the impact on individuals and facilitate suitable incident management and response.

    Teaching Activity

    I teach and mentor students in information security at PG/UG courses, placements, and PhD/DBA research programmes. Examples include: 

    • Aston's MBA Cyber Security programme. Module leader and part of the delivery team for BNM755 Cyber Security Risk and Strategy.
    • Undergraduate Teaching. Module leader and part of the delivery team for BN3377 Information Security.
    • New MSc Cyber Security Management. Co-developer for the course, module leader, and part of the delivery team.
    • Training and bootcamps. An ISACA and APMG Accredited University Instructor, I deliver bootcamps in Cyber Security in close collaboration with employers, recruiters, and the UK Cyber Security Council.
    • Supervision of MSc and MBA dissertations.
    • Placements. As a student mentor and placement tutor.
