Abstract
Mechanistic models based on geometrically necessary dislocations are re-examined in light of recent experiments exhibiting the indentation size effect. A simple method is developed to combine work hardening, solid solution hardening, radiation hardening and size effects. The model is verified by experiments in ionic salt crystals.
