Abstract

Higher education institutions are charged with many responsibilities, of which equipping students for work is perhaps the most commonly expected. Exactly how best to carry out this commission is a source of ongoing debate, being a multifaceted and highly context dependent task. This research is a work in progress that can be broadly summarised as asking the question "Is design education fit for purpose?" The journey begins by exploring the purpose of a design education in order to establish a set of criteria by which to analyse its effectiveness. Central to understanding the educational context are the attitudes and expectations of students and tutors, the experiences of graduates and the demands of industry. A methodology is described for the collection and review of such data, and a summary provided of works completed to date.
