Abstract
The first activity of a simulation study is to define the problem situation which provides the context for the development of the conceptual model. This involves making assumptions about the real world and the outcome of this stage is a system description. In this article we discuss assumptions regarding data acquisition when we are faced with a lack of data about the real world, and data awareness, categorised here as explicit assumptions (assumptions regarding data that we are aware of) and implicit assumptions (assumptions regarding data that we are not aware of). The consequences of our ability to acquire and be aware of data is presented as a combination of our known and unknown knowledge of that data. The purpose is to highlight the issues surrounding making assumptions in discrete-event simulation studies and to suggest further work when considering implicit assumptions.
