Abstract

This chapter provides a general overview of Sassoon’s work and an introductory section on the war poems and memoirs. The chapter then focuses in detail on the language of Sassoon’s 1916 war poems, highlighting some key stylistic characteristics of verse written in what was a pivotal year for Sassoon and on the process of remembering and retelling in The Memoirs of George Sherston. The chapter ends with discussion of the ways in which Sassoon’s work has been interpreted and an outline of some key texts.
