Abstract
Atrial fibrillation is associated with increased risk for thromboembolism. The risk of atrial fibrillation-related thromboembolism is not homogenous and it is influenced by the presence of comorbid stroke risk factors. Estimating risk of thromboembolism is an important first step in the management of patients with atrial fibrillation. CHA2DS2-VASc score is a useful clinical tool that can aid decision making in antithrombotic management of patients with atrial fibrillation. Only truly low-risk patients with atrial fibrillation (CHA2DS2-VASc score = 0) will not benefit from oral anticoagulation.
