N2 - Aerospace is a crucial industry for the UK economy and rated the second largest in the world and the largest in Europe. While major improvements in competitiveness have occurred in recent years, principally through the adoption of ‘Lean’ manufacturing techniques, these practices are insufficient to prepare the industry for the new and emerging challenges of the 21st Century. If this sector is to survive and grow, it needs understand and react to this emerging business environment, this paper therefore summarises research that has set out to quantify the forces of change impacting on this sector in the UK. This work is based on a systematic review of existing literature and an extensive survey of UK practitioners.
